‘Early life experiences actually get under the skin and into the body, with lifelong effects on adult physical and mental health.’
– Harvard University
In the words of Julie Andrews, ‘Let’s start at the very beginning, it’s a very good place to start’. If you want to build wellbeing, resilience and healthy relationships, it’s more effective to get things right first time rather than trying to fix them later.
According to research from Harvard, ‘In the first few years of life, more than 1 million new neural connections are formed every second.’ And these aren’t just predetermined connections. This shaping of the brain’s architecture is dependant on the child’s environment. The genes that are expressed are a direct result of simple human interaction. The back and forth (or serve and return) interaction with young children is more than just a bit of fun, it can shape the rest of their lives. Healthy interactions build strength and their absence creates a serious threat to the child’s wellbeing. In short, every word, smile and listening ear that you offer significantly impacts a small person’s world.
